Srinagar, August 31, 2025
The Department of Zoology, University of Kashmir today flagged off a seven-day educational and scientific tour to Ladakh, from August 31 to September 6, 2025, as part of the department’s curriculum aimed at strengthening students’ understanding of faunal biodiversity, ecological systems, and regional cultures.
The tour was officially flagged off by Prof. Tariq Ahmad, Head of the Department of Zoology, in the presence of all faculty members. A total of 35 students from the department are participating, under the supervision of Dr. Yahya Bakhtiyar, Assistant Professor, who is acting as the Tour Incharge. The group is being assisted by Mr. Nazir Ahmad and Mr. Rouf Ahmad as supporting staff.
The tour will cover major ecological and cultural sites in Ladakh, including Kargil, Leh, Khardung La, Nubra Valley, Hunder, Pangong Lake, and adjoining areas. These locations have been carefully selected for their ecological significance and rich cultural heritage, offering students a unique opportunity to observe and document the fauna of high-altitude cold desert ecosystems.
During the tour, students will engage in faunal surveys, specimen collection, habitat observation, and interaction with local communities to study the human-nature interface. The program is designed to provide hands-on training in field-based zoological research while also exposing students to the diverse cultural and environmental landscapes of the region.
“These field visits are crucial for developing practical skills in zoology, enhancing research capabilities, and nurturing respect for diverse cultures and ecosystems.
